Discovering Geneva, Switzerland

That night, we had an interesting dinner with Mary Lynn and John Hula, who were also traveling via Geneva. We told the Hulas of our initial impressions and they asked whether we had seen the Old Town. After dinner we all strolled across the Rhone to a section of the city that we had not visited and we got a glimpse of a much different Geneva than we had seen previously. It made us think back to much of what we loved about Italy; the narrow streets with intimate curbside dining and the solid feeling one gets when experiencing an old, thoroughly reliable friend.

The other fascinating aspect to our dinner was that the kitchen help was more interested in watching a quarter final Euro Cup football match than they were in cooking our dinners. When Switzerland beat Italy in the match, Geneva came alive with honking cars and cheering citizens. It lifted all our moods.

The following morning, Jani and I had a very pleasant walk along the Rhone and Lake Geneva, in the calm that followed a late night thunder storm. It cemented our new perspective on Geneva, and also augmented the feeling that each day of our 3-week trip was a success.
