After a terrific lunch at the refuge, we trundled over the adjoining hill to view White Lake, which was mostly frozen. Then we started back down, with the sense that we had been privileged to have experienced some of the most incredible mountain scenery imaginable and that we had managed a tough climb. Occasionally, our minds strayed from the path down, as we tried hard to embed these majestic images, hoping that our memories would retain them. All in all, this was a stupendous day.

The first leg of the hike was on a gravel path with sections of loose rock
Clear signage is always welcome on a hike
Early in this hike, looking up to the higher range
A nicely constructed boardwalk helped over some wet areas
A retaining wall, along the way, was built with lots of backbreaking labor
The last of the boardwalk, as the climb got steeper
We were always accompanied by gorgeous surroundings
No trees but plenty of greenery … in the beginning.
Our meandering path can be seen, save for the “distraction” of stunning views
Along the way, a valley opened up in the distance
It was glorious
Good spot for a photo opp
A few “extreme trailbuilding measures” were employed as the climb progressed
This loose rock section has a steel mesh, small logs and a handrail to aid hikers
A shaley section of trail
Ever upward!
