Allagash Day 4 – Brook Trout for Dinner

Day 4 of our trip looked to be a slower river day with receding water levels, but the slower pace gave us a chance to better appreciate the landscape all around us. And it was glorious. The colors of early fall started to emerge as we wended our way north and there had been subtle changes to the vegetation and topography all along. Every new day seemed to hold some unexpected skill or surprise.

We headed out on the river after a breakfast of apple cinnamon pancakes and brown rice oatmeal. Our first surprise on the river was Lani’s discovery of a moose skeleton. After a couple of hours of riffles river paddling, we stopped at the mouth of Five Finger Brook, where we snacked while Dick Farris caught two sizable Brook Trout in a ten-minute span. It looked as if today’s biggest surprise would be trout for dinner.

We camped at Deadwater North, where, along with trout that Dick and Karen shared, we had ham steaks with pineapple, salad and dinner rolls for our evening meal.
