Remembering those we lost in 2020
More people than usual lost loved ones this year, but the ones that we knew and love continue to have a resounding effect. It only seems right to remember them here, in order to give some perspective, or balance, to the other activities and memories we honor.
YVETTE BARBY – Nicole’s maternal grandmother
(Died May 13, 2020, 93 years)
Every time we had the pleasure of being with Nicole’s grandmother was a treat. She always seemed upbeat and full of life. She made a great effort to attend Sam’s early birthday parties, from her home in New England, and gave a memorable speech at Austin and Nicole’s wedding. She and Jani’s mom, Ellen, were immediate friends, which speaks volumes for two of the loveliest ladies one would be lucky enough to meet.

CHICK WELLMAN – husband of Jani’s cousin Beth
(Died May 25, 2020, 73 years)
Chick was a distant relation, living in Indianapolis, but when we met up in 2012 at the Summer Reunion at Kent & Francesca’s, there was an instant attraction. He was a down-to-earth and extremely likable person, of whom one would want to know more: A person you would want to spend time with.
FRANK TURLEY – one of Gary’s mentors
(Died November 14, 2020, 84 years)
Frank had a profound effect on Gary’s career and on his outlook on life. After taking his blacksmithing course in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Gary stayed on to help Frank with his horseshoeing. This was the early 1970’s, and the lessons learned from this experience were foundational, having survived the many intervening years when they had no contact.
